WASTE SORTING INSTRUCTION

Waste sorting instruction

On the sorting of energy waste

Sorting of energy waste commenced in households in southern Kymenlaakso in April 1999. In practice, this means that a kitchen must be provided with a conventional garbage bag and also an orange bag for energy waste, i.e. all waste that can be combusted. All waste bags must be closed properly and placed by the tenants in the same waste container, and the waste management company transports the waste to a waste management centre in Anjalankoski.

Energy waste includes:
- plastic waste with the exception of beverage bottles for which a refund is paid, and PVC plastic
- cardboard and paper which, on account of impurity or other feature, is not suitable for paper recycling
- packaging materials and products composed of several materials suitable for energy use

Energy waste includes for instance the following types of plastics (e.g. markings PE, PP, PET and PS)
- plastic bottles, containers, canisters and buckets (such as detergent bottles)
- plastic packaging materials and boxes (such as expanded polystyrene)
- plastic bags, jugs and films
- plastic covers and caps
- packaging plastic used on foodstuffs (such as yoghurt cups, margarine boxes)
- boxes and other packaging made of expanded polystyrene (styrox)
- small plastic articles (small toys, brushes)
- plastic covers

The following fibre-based materials are energy waste:
- wrapping papers (on meat, fish and cold cuts; gift papers)
- cardboard, paper and paperboard not suitable for paper recycling (pizza, cake and chocolate boxes, crisp bread packaging)
- book covers

The following miscellaneous materials are energy waste:

- candy papers
- aroma-proof packaging (often with several materials in layers)
- bread bags made of paper and plastic
- disposable dishes

The following wooden materials are energy waste:
- relatively small wooden objects and articles.
